Achievement vs ascription
lDeals with how status and power in a society are determined lStatus can be based either on what someone does, or what someone is. Cultures differ in the way they have solved this dilemma.
FonsTrompenaar was a student of Hofstede and developped like him a system of comparison of cultural dimensions. He was an empirical worker and found also like Hofstede the points of his ideas in empirical work. The people, who are talking about his work, are talking about five, six or seven basic dimensions, Trompenaar used for describing the cultural field. In the end there are five, which concerns the relationships between humans and humans:Universalism vs particularism; Individualism vs collectivism; Neutral vs. Affective relationship; Specific vs diffuse relationships; Achievement vs. Ascription. Apart of that there are two others, which concern the manner, in which a culture is using the time and the manner, in which a culture tries to get control of the environment and nature: Serility vs. Parallelity; Intern control vs extern control.
